What’s The Big Fuss Anyway?

Recently, the rant has been Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson declining their invitation to the Mercedes Championship — the tourney that starts off the 2006 golf season. People have said their excuses are ‘weak’ and they should attend the event anyway.

First of all, the golf season is extremely long as it is and Tiger being #1 on the PGA Tour money list last season with over $10 million, I think, has a right to miss whatever events he so chooses. Furthermore, Tiger has single-handedly turned golf into what it is today, bring in many viewers that wouldn’t even be interested in the sport if it wasn’t for him. In my opinion, his ‘I need some time away from golf’ is a more than valid excuse.

Moving on to Phil Mickelson, he had said he chose to skip the Mercedies Championship to spend time with his family. Who gives someone a hard time for not attending a golf event who wants to spend time with his family instead? If he wants to spend time with his family let him. Personally, I think Mickelson has his head in the right place. Family is very important and you should always make time for those you love. So, his excuse is another valid one in my book.

It’s the first event this season and people need to drop it. They’re not playing, but they’ll be playing in dozens of other events this season and many more in years to come. Give them their space and let them do as they please.
