Problems With WordPress

Do any of you ever have those ideas that’s so brilliant in your head but after you follow through with it, you find out it was nothing but a huge waste of time? Yeah, I had one of those yesterday. Here’s the story.

So I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to the newest version of WordPress, my oh my how wrong I was.

This all started out because I was looking for new golf blogs to read and ran across one I really like over at GolfersDelight.de. I noticed that he was using this really cool plugin which incorporated AJAX into the commenting system of WordPress. Sweet I thought. He was using WordPress. I was using WordPress. All I would have to do is upgrade and install the plugin.

The conversion went over fine. We were able to backup the old version of WordPress along with the database. The fresh install of the new WordPress version also went smooth. Everything was updated and operational with no apparent problems.

Well, after a day of using the newest version, I ran into many things that utterly pissed me off. First off unlike the version I’m using now, WordPress makes it so you can’t type any HTML code into the text box. There’s a separate button you have to click and it pops open a separate window which then allows you to enter whatever HTML code you need to enter. I didn’t run into any problems with doing basic coding such as an “a href” for links, but when wanting to do something like add videos from YouTube, it messed up my entire blog layout.

You figure it wouldn’t be that big of a deal if the video just didn’t show up because I’m sure there’s a way to get the videos to work, but it messed up everything for all my other posts as well. So I then deleted the post and it returned everything back to normal. Good I thought at least I don’t have to rollback the entire site. I tried a few more things in failed attempts to get the videos working and decided it would just be better to rollback the WordPress version and the database since the backup was only a couple days old.

Now, for those of you that had posted comments on specific posts of mine, that’s the reason they may no longer be there anymore. Everything should be functional again.

At least this is a helpful lesson in why it’s important to ALWAYS backup whatever you’re working on. You never know what could happen.

Damn, could have told you about these problems, I encountered them as well.

I’d rather write the HTML myself as well, especially because the formatting isn’t that proper if you use the regular text box instead of the html-box.

The youtube-problem I couldn’t solve either. There are other wordpress blogs that don’t have this problem so I guess it must be a bug of the K2 theme I am using.

I still have to dig into wordpress, I just upgraded from a blogger-account to WP 2.0 some weeks ago. As with the game, you also have to bring along some patience with the tech stuff.

I actually tried doing the YouTube without the K2 theme. I was using the default theme for WP and it still didn’t work.

As with patience with the tech stuff, there’s certain things I’ll be patient with. Such as coding my own site or other things of that sort. But if I’m using a program that someone else wrote and the code is all messed up, especially when an older version worked perfect, I have no patience at all.

At least with coding you can blame somebody else. But not with your golf game!!!

You can turn off that editor in your options and make it just like the old version.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I’ll have to reinstall the latest version.
