Keep Your Head Down

I was out golfing yesterday with my buddy Justin. He’s not a regular golfer, but he trys go out with my friends and I a few times every month in the summer. He plays a lot of baseball, and it’s evident by the way he swings his golf clubs. He would always raise his head and in turn his left shoulder would come up giving him topped shots everytime.

You don’t need a perfect golf swing to end up with a decent shot. There are some fundamentals you must keep in mind and in doing so you’ll always end up with shots better than topped balls. These are in regards to iron shots.

Lean over. Don’t bend your knees like you’re doing a squat. You want a little bend in your knees, but not much. You want to bend at your waist, lean over and keep your back straight. Doing so will keep you on that same “plane” everyone is always talking about.

Strike down at the ball. A common misconception with beginners is you need to scoop the ball in the air. WRONG! Let the clubface do all the scooping for you. You want to strike down at the ball keeping your hands before the clubhead. Doing so will give you higher and longer iron shots.

Keep your head down. You don’t want to look up until you see green where your golf ball was sitting. As long as you keep your head down, you wont lift your shoulders and you’ll end up with a nice swing and follow through.
