Golfing At Camelot Golf Club
Tuesday night I was at work and received a call from my buddy Matt. He had one person bail on him at the last moment and needed a fourth player for an 8am tee time Wednesday morning at Camelot in Lomira, Wisconsin — needless to say, he sure knew the right person to call.
I ended up leaving work around 1am and didn’t crawl into bed till 2. I don’t know about the rest of you, but going to bed at 2 doesn’t mean falling asleep at 2. I figure I was cutting Zs by 2:30 or so. Well, 6am Wednesday morning came along and my alarm sure didn’t wake me up nicely by shaking my shoulder and saying, “Jason, Jason it’s time to get up” in a soothing voice. It was more like a loud blare from an out of tune radio station piercing my ear drums. You know the not quite static, but not quite radio station. I sat up in bed an thought — only for golf would I ever do this.
I finally got on my feat and jumped in the shower and got ready. On only three and a half hours of sleep, taking a shower didn’t have the same affect it usually does. When I got out, I wasn’t any more awake than when I had hopped in. I finished getting ready and ran downstairs to grab something to eat. I only had about five minutes until I had to leave to head for Matt’s house, so I inhaled a bowl of Captain Crunch and washed it down with a Red Bull. Healthy breakfast huh?
After the 30 minute drive to Matt’s house it was another 45 minutes or so to the golf course, so we promptly left as soon as I arrived. On the drive down the freeway, it was foggy outside and I was thinking, “Great. I’m not going to be able to see where my ball lands.”
By the time we pulled into the parking lot, the fog had parted and it was pretty clear outside. We walked into the Pro shop to pay for our round — which, by the way, was only $23 — and was greeted by this foursome of elderly ladies who were just about to begin playing the back nine. They flirted with us while we paid for the round and then we laughed about it as we walked to the first tee.
We played the front nine and by the 5th or 6th hole the sun had completely come out and was beating down on us with all its fury. As we were making the turn it was probably in the low to mid 90’s. It was hot.
My game was so inconsistent all day long it wasn’t even funny. I hit one birdie and three pars. Mostly everything else was a bogey or double bogey, but there were three holes I carded snowmen. That’s 24 strokes right there and let me tell you, that destroys your score. Even though I carded a 98 at the end of 18, I didn’t feel too bad about my game. I had a chip in on the 13th — it was my birdie — I also had some good putts.
This being my second time playing Camelot, I liked it better than the first time I played there. The first time I played there, it didn’t look like their rough had been cut in over a week. On Wednesday though, everything was perfect. The fairway and roughs were cut and the greens were in immaculate condition. I was able to tell why it was named Wisconsin’s golf course of the year in 2003.
I’m sure I’ll be playing there again sometime soon this summer. At $23 for 18 holes there’s no reason not to. I have yet to play Fire Ridge this summer which is by far my favorite golf course around here. Hopefully I’ll be able to get much more golf in while the good weather lasts.
