Are Golfers Fat?
I found a story on MSNBC that talked about golf and if it’s really exercise. I’d have to say yes and no.
If you take a look at a lot of the pros, say Tiger Woods, he’s ripped as hell. I’m sure Tiger’s wife Elin Woods works out just as much and probably looks a whole lot better doing it, but that’s beside the point. Tiger works out and stays in shape. Someone like Phil Mickelson though, probably doesn’t work out quite as much. Just by looking at him, I’d say Phil doesn’t visit a gym regularly. However, that doesn’t mean he’s not a good golfer and isn’t winning tournaments. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are extraordinary golfers and bring home tons of money in winnings.
Amateurs on the other hand, according to Golf Digest, claim to be “overweight”.
“America’s amateur golfers are an unhealthy group, according to an unscientific online survey published in the August issue of Golf Digest. Among the results from the 514 mostly male subscribers who responded: 66 percent are overweight…Among survey respondents, 76 percent consume an average of 6.8 alcoholic drinks per week. Nine percent admitted to drinking 10 or more beers during a round of golf.”
Are you kidding me?! Nine percent of them admitted to drinking 10 or more beers during a single round? That’s just absurd. I can see maybe drinking a beer or two and flirting with the cart girl a little, but 10 beers, that’s overkill. Lets break it down. Say you pay $50 for a round of golf. As you’re playing the 18 holes, you consume 10 beers — all of which cost you $3.50 or $4.00 a piece. That already puts you up to $90 for just one round. After tips to the cute cart girl you’re well over $100.
Take it from me, next time you get the urge to buy beer after beer, stop after two or three. You’ll find out you play a lot better the less drunk you are. Also, when you get the urge to take a cart, pass on that as well and walk the 18 holes. It’s good exercise and even better for your heart.
